Never again were the words uttered from David Walliams after his amazing swim across the channel for Sport Relief last year. The self-confessed exercise-phobe had spent months training for the challenge that involved putting in 4 hour sessions of swimming and getting open water practice in lakes, rivers and the sea. He has now decided he’s doing it all over again.
David will join Olympic rowing champion James Cracknell to swim a 14 mile stretch across the busy shipping channel -the Straits of Gibraltar. You can track David and James’ progress via www.challengecracknell.com.
The Straits of Gibraltar will be a lot rougher and much colder than the Channel for David as this swim is earlier in the year. David and James are no strangers to cold water thanks to their first training session together at Dorney Lake in Windsor in almost freezing-temperatures.
The Swim will take the two between four and six hours and according to James “what’s kept me going throughout this challenge is the thought of all that much-needed money I’m helping raise for Sports Relief”. He has also forgotten he may set a new World Record if he successfully completes the challenge.
The two are aiming to complete the challenge in order to raise as much money as possible for Sport Relief. After James’ recent visit to Ethiopia to see what a difference Sport Relief makes to people’s lives, his only goal in mind is to raise as much cash as possible to continue helping vulnerable people living incredibly tough lives both in the UK and all over the world.
Currently, the two have covered 1451.23 miles and are swimming at a total average speed of 19.5 mph. They are well on the way to reaching their goal of Morroco. Good luck guys; rather you than me, although, it is all in need of a good cause. I might just stick to a sponsored silence or jog.

Jonny Wilkinson needs just one point against Scotland at Murrayfield to become the top scorer in Test rugby history.
Following a ruling yesterday by the International Rugby Board, England’s fly half is now officially tied with Wales’ Neil Jenkins on 1090 points. The iRB have confirmed that they have conferred Test status on the British Lions match against Argentina in May 2005 and therefore the 20 points scored by Wilkinson will now be counted.
Good Luck Jonny!
