Touch of China

Galleries from mainland China will have an unprecedented presence at the 27th annual ARCO fair this year, running February 13-18 in Madrid, providing further evidence of their successful integration into the global art market. In the Solo Projects program, Colin Chinnery, chief curator of the Ullens Center for Contemporary Art in Beijing, is one of 10 curators chosen to select installations by individual artists. Chinnery has invited four artists and their galleries to offer presentations: Jin Shan of Beijing’s Pekin Fine Arts, Xu Zhen of Shanghai’s ShanghART, Li Songsong of Beijing and Lucerne’s Galerie Urs Meile, and Liu Wei of UniversalStudios-Beijing, now called Boers Li Gallery (Universal Studios in Hollywood recently asked them to cease using the name). These artists will be presented in individual booths in a separate section of the fair similar to the Statements section of Art Basel.

In addition to the solo projects, several galleries from China or specializing in Chinese contemporary art will have booths at ARCO, including Beijing Art Now Gallery, L.A. Galerie Lothar Albrecht (Frankfurt), Xin Dong Cheng Space for Contemporary Art (Beijing), Albion (London), and Arario (Seoul). Chambers Fine Art (New York and Beijing) will have its artist Wang Jianwei participating in the fair’s video-screening program at the fair, and 10 Chancery Lane (Hong Kong) and China Blue Gallery (Beijing) will participate in the ARCO40, a venue for newer galleries.

Though galleries like Urs Meile, Pekin Fine Arts, and ShanghART regularly participate in major international fairs, this will be the ARCO debut for most of the other participants.
