Tuesday saw the arrival of a 15 metre long finback whale, estimated to weigh 43 tons the La Petunia beach in Marbella. The huge mammal was still alive when it became stuck on Tuesday evening. Hundreds of people doused the animal with water for hours as it struggled to free itself from the beach at San Pedro.
It’s the largest whale ever to reach the Costa del Sol but sadly after a rescue effort yesterday it succumbed to its injuries and will now be removed from the beach after an autopsy has taken place. A huge crane was brought in to lift the corpse onto a low-loader. It was taken away and an autopsy will be carried out to establish the exact cause of death. The news was given by the Regional Environment Councillor, Ignacio Trillo.
Close to 3,000 people reportedly gathered on the beach to watch as some experts in small boats tried to get the animal back out to sea. The animal had reached the beach under its own steam, and had some injuries to its skin, thought to have come from being beaten against rocks.
Blue Whales are said to be the largest creatures on the planet and can grow to more than 100 feet in length and weigh more than 180 tonnes.
